Super austenitic stainless with PREN above 42 — the economic answer to chlorinated seawater.
254SMO is a high-molybdenum, nitrogen-alloyed super austenitic stainless with a pitting resistance equivalent number above 42. That puts it well beyond 316L and 904L in chloride pitting and crevice resistance, at a fraction of nickel-alloy cost.
It is used for seawater heat exchangers, bleach plants, FGD scrubbers and pulp mill equipment — anywhere chlorides would pit a 300-series grade. It has good ductility and weldability, but does require the correct filler and heat input.
ASTM A182 (forgings), A240 (plate), A312 (pipe), A276 (bar)
